Irish Pride on St. Patrick’s Day
Today is the day that Irish around the world celebrate not only St. Patrick- the patron saint of Ireland, but also all things Irish. Whatever city in America you reside, you are bound to witness a sea of green and scally caps. The number of folks with Irish descent in the U.S. far outnumbers the population of Ireland and on St. Patrick’s Day, this heritage overflows into the streets in a wave of jubilation.
In the Northeast, our Irish pride runs particularly deep and this year we were blessed with a performance by the greatest Irish band of all time: The Pogues on March 11th in Boston. In New York, the 250th St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place today. That’s right, do the math: the New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade is older than the United States.
In Savannah, Georgia, one of the lesser known but best St. Patrick’s day celebrations flows along historic River Street. Seventy-six degree weather and St. Patrick’s Day? Yes please! In Chicago, they go as far as dyeing the river green and hold the city’s largest parade, although it is held on the 12th of March and not on St. Patrick’s Day.
Today the world raises its glasses in unison and declares on this day that we are all Irish!
