Blackpool Lights

Blackpool Illuminations Ignite Travel Plans

After enduring the sweltering heat of summer, millions of travelers will make their way to cool and breezy Blackpool, England, to view the annual Blackpool Illuminations, a joyous waterfront festival of lights. Combining a rich history, advanced technology, multimedia visual art, and spectacle, the Blackpool Illuminations have been dubbed “the greatest free light show on Earth.”

You may choose to rent a car in Blackpool to join in the fun! The plethora of light displays will have something to appeal to every person. Animated light features will delight, lasers will excite, and the Doctor Who fanatic might even quake as they face an army of glowing daleks.

This year, the festive display commences nightly for 73 evenings from the Switch On Show, a night of fun with a celebrity guest and a concert on August 30th, until November 10th, so a car rental in the United Kingdom would certainly provide a traveler with plenty of opportunities to drive the entire stretch of lights, as well as indulge with the other offerings of the area.

The celebrated event was first switched on in 1879 with “artificial sunlight” beaming from eight primitive street lamps—a full 12 months before Thomas Edison submitted his patent for the light bulb! But the modern annual light display festivals didn’t really kick off until 1912, when a new section of the Promenade was constructed, and Royal Princess Louise celebrated the opening with a parade and 10,000 bulbs hung in decorative garland lamps. This was at a time when very few people had electric lights in their homes.

Since then, Blackpool has held the festival annually at the end of the summer resort season, pausing only for both World Wars. The Illuminations now use over 1 million bulbs and stretch an impressive 10 kilometers (approximately 6 miles) along the coast. With this monumental electric consumption, you’ll be happy to know that the Blackpool Illuminations are now powered entirely by renewable green energy.

Blackpool itself is a pleasant seaside town only an hour drive from either Liverpool or Manchester, and features a variety of dining and hotel establishments, concert venues, the central pier with a Ferris wheel, the stately Blackpool Tower, and an amusement park. Renting a car in Blackpool would provide you with ample time for family fun, nightlife and lifelong memories. If you are traveling with your child, don’t forget to request a child car seat with your UK car rental so the Blackpool Illuminations can be enjoyed safely and legally by the whole family!
