This week we have been looking at the United Kingdom and today we are featuring Castle Howard, a magnificent landmark in York!
Castle Howard is one of Britain’s finest stately homes, located approximately 15 miles north-east of York. The building was erected in 1699, after almost 100 years of construction. Its prominent dome, one of the most distinguishing features of the castle, is immediately visible upon arrival. The architectural genius behind the castle was Sir John Vanbrugh, with the assistance of Nicholas Hawksmoor.
If you’re in the mood to shop, there are various boutiques available selling chocolates, flowers, toys and books about the history of the property. Architecture buffs will love visiting the castle, as it hosts over 200 listed buildings and monuments with a stunning collection of temples, statues, and gardens. The interior houses world-famous collections of antique sculptures and paintings by such artists as Canaletto, Holbein, Gainsborough, and Reynolds.
The castle also hosts monthly events that are perfect for families looking for a taste of English culture. Rent a car in York and drive the family to Castle Howard as this month features the classic tales of ‘Alice’ in the Alice Outdoor Promenade Theater. This month also features the Artsmix Contemporary Art Market, showcasing ceramics, textiles, jewelry, sculptures, paintings, and more. June offers even more fun-filled adventures for travelers, such as wine tastings, grounds tours, trail races, and the famous White Rose Polo – Castle Howard Cup! Many of these events even include lunch, made by the castle’s world renowned chefs!
