Portugal is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe; but what should you do once you get there? A car rental in Faro can help you drive to many of the beautiful destinations around the city. The Old Town, bedazzled by an 18th century archway, is host to many historical sites. Upon entry, you’ll be greeted by cobblestone streets and surrounded by balconied houses. In the center of town is a beautiful square that was once the home of the Roman Forum. Off to one side is a magnificent 13th century cathedral, which faces an 18th century Episcopal palace and a 16th century convent. Amongst the treasures of the palace are a large Roman mosaic and a magnificent collection of paintings.
Also nearby, is the ‘golden’ Nossa Senhora do Carmo. The church is said to be the greatest example of gold-leaf woodwork in the south of Portugal. Looking for something even more unique? Head to the back of the church and check out the Capella dos Ossos. This is Faro’s most popular attraction, though slightly grim in nature: its walls are lined with the bones of over 1,200 monks! Although an amazing site to behold, I would recommend bringing only the most mature children inside.
Looking to relax? Head to the beach! Faro Island is just 10km from the city and offers every seaside activity. Formosamar boat trips offer quiet, romantic adventures for two or the opportunity to explore the Ria Formosa Nature Park. The park is a popular stopping place for hundreds of species of birds during migration.
